A Trip to China
“A Trip to China” by Princeton University Press examines the people and issues of modern China. Taken from the less nationalistic and more neutral viewpoint of an American student in China, the book explores the complexity and diversity of Chinese society through everyday experiences. Politically neutral though sometimes provocative, the book journeys through daily life to the discussion of issues.
This book is used as the course book for Meridian Intermediate Level Mandarin.
China’s Own Critics
“China’s Own Critics” by Princeton University Press presents a selection of thirteen expository essays from the 1920s to the 1980s written by influential Chinese intellectuals on controversial issues of their time, such as women’s liberation, Chinese language reform, modernisation, freedom and patriotism.
The book delivers the framework for discussion in Meridian’s Advanced Level Mandarin courses and through an appraisal of the intellectual climate at that time, students will not only perfect their language skills but gain valuable insight and understanding of many political and cultural facets of modern China.
This book provides an essential training ground for those students who not only want to sharpen their command of Mandarin but simultaneously wish to understand the very fabric of Chinese society.
